At the moment, the rules stipulate that the same confederation can't host twice in a row, which shuts out both Australia and China until 2030. They could well change the rules before then though.

Also notice the voting - Australia's bid came dead last, with 1 vote from the 22 delegates. It'll be interesting to see what discussions come out of that, I don't think you can put the blame on any one single factor.

The way some people are talking makes it sound like it came down to Qatar vs Australia, but, realistically, eliminated round 1 with only 1 vote - - Australia wasn't beaten by Qatar. Australia was beaten by the field!!

Funny - I don't really care, 12 years away is a long time, I certainly didn't like the FFA's domestic approach. I do however feel a tinge of sadness that Australia has been so roundly rejected!!!

However, anyone who checked out the Stadiums section of the Come Play website or the STadiums section of the FIFA bid review - would've noticed that FIFA only seems to recognise cricket and soccer as 'current users' - - for Geelong Stadium, FIFA's report lists "No information".

I recall something David Gallop said when the NRL rejected the FFA's resched proposals almost a year to the day ago - Gallop talked of support, but that it could not come at any price.

"We are not trying to stand in the way of the World Cup bid but we are not prepared to fall off the face of the planet either," he said

Alas, the FFA was doing it's best to make Australian Football (AFL) and RL etc to fall off the face of the planet - - - so, quite frankly, I didn't trust them and on that front, I'm pleased that THIS bid did not succeed.

Like the Republic, there's a difference between conceptual support and specific approval.

btw - when FIFA dropped their 'rotation' policy back in 2007 - the new format was that anyone could bid OTHER than members of either of the previous 2 hosting confederations.

That means that Europe is no go for 2026, England can't do it now until 2030,

and Australia can't go again until 2034.

Unless this system has been scrapped, then, the talk on some media outlets about "Do we bid again for 2026" is pretty much nonsense.

England did almost as badly as Australia, out in the first round with 2 votes - one of which was their former head.

It will be interesting to see how the soccer Pundits come out swinging after this huge disapointment, only yesterday ( friday 02 ) I heard Paul Wade (former Socceroo ) in Heigtend Euphoria, talking on the ABC, that winning this oportunity may well bring about the Demise of the AFL and the NRL, when I heard the disapointing result last night my first thought was here we go again out comes the huge FFA finger pointed firstly at the AFL, the NRL then Australian culture or lack of
