As expected Williamstown Seagulls have claimed the inaugural Foxtel Cup.

The strong VFL side travelled to Perth to take on Claremont at Paterson's Stadium and encountered a spirited fight, with the locals just 5 points down at 3/4 time. But Williamstown took control in the final quarter, kicking three unanswered goals for a comfortable 21 point win.

Although the Foxtel Cup is a made for TV tournament it would've been nice to have the game played in front of more than the 1405 people who turned up to watch the tournament's finale. Perhaps it will grow in status in the coming years.

Awesome, a low scoring game. I wouldn't mind seeing some more scorelines like that in the AFL, so many blowouts are not so interesting.

Ha! So many people complained about low scoring ugly grinding games over recent years, now we're seeing big scores and people don't like that either!

But the blow outs, the massive margins in some AFL games lately is a worry. Gold Coast will improve but some others may struggle with a compromised draft etc. I suspect having a reserves side is a big part of Geelong and Collingwood's success - lifts them from very good to ridiculously good. You can train set plays very precisely and then all the new players get to practice them, in their positions, in the VFL, whereas most clubs don't have that control, be it other Victorian clubs or non-Vic. Admittedly not helping Brisbane much at the moment.

That's an interesting hypothesis as it makes much sense. I'm wondering if the other clubs are seeing it like that too. If the WA and SA sides decided they wanted their own reserve sides that'd put massive pressure on the WAFL and SANFL respectively. A reserves competition for the whole league seems to be a fair solution, but that'd likely kill the state leagues and the Foxtel Cup.

Already the WA and SA are wanting to keep pace with Collingwood .

The very simple solution is to ban the type of associations that have developed in the VFL .Contrary to the romantic notions of a lot of people the reserves add nothing to the fan because to of huge pre-game warmup ,cost $500,000 p.a. per club and decimate second tier competitions .

Thought the score didn't reflect the game .Claremont had most of the attacking and as is becoming common in the AFL ,Williamstown scored mostly on the rebound .
