AFL Footywild have recently reviewed their 2014 season, and this article from their own website lists their achievements for the year. In a season which saw improvement on a number of fronts, there were two areas in particular which illustrated the success well. The South African team performed admirably at the International Cup in August, reaching the semi-final stage and finishing in fourth place overall.

Additionally a number of new teams were created and formed a National Premier league, a step towards higher performance and greater opportunities. The teams featured are the four key Australian Rules football playing provinces – Super Owls and Warriors (Gauteng), Nyanga Bluebirds and Khayelitsha Divines (Western Cape), Wild Cats and Platinum Buffaloes (North West) and Giant Bees and Hurricanes (KwaZulu Natal).

The following is a review of the year.

What a great season this year has been for AFL South Africa. A lot of boxes were ticked and we are confident to say “We are moving forward and in the right direction”.

Following are some of those achievements:

Two Under 16 players participated at the World 18 tournament in Gold Coast, Australia – July 2014.

Eight new job opportunities were created.

We sent a group of 40 people to represent South Africa at the AFL 2014 International Cup in Melbourne, Australia.

South Africa came first in their pool and made it to the semi-finals of the tournament.

South Africa finished 4th out of 18 countries who participated.

A new National footyWILD Premier League was launched with eight (8) new teams in the competition, all with new names, colours, logos and uniforms.

AFL South Africa is now a member of Australian Business Chamber of Commerce, Southern Africa (ABCSA)

We hosted St Mary’s - a group from Geelong, Australia - for the second time.

Under 19’s won first International match of all groups we hosted in South Africa.

We appointed Benjamin Motuba as South Africa Lions Head Coach for 2017 AFL International Cup.

“I am excited to be part of new developments and above mentioned successes. It proves that the organisation is growing and moving in the right direction. I would like to thank AFL South Africa for the confidence they have in me and I believe I will produce great results with all the support I have behind me.” said AFL South Africa National Football & Talent Manager, Benjamin Motuba.
