Changing of the guard at AFANA

Contrary to what S A Funder seems to think, we have assured the other officers and members that we will assist in the transition and be available to support our successors for a reasonable length of time following our resignations. As with most volunteer organizations, succession is not as straightforward as it is with organizations where every job is fully funded and paid. AFANA is not AFL funded and has been self supporting for the entire 13 year history. The membership and officers were given notice well in advance of the public announcement.

After 13 years of 40 to 60 hour weeks, Ann and I have earned the right to leave on our own terms and we both hope we have made lasting contributions to the sport in North America. However, as long we are both here there will never seem to be a need to the footy public for anyone else to lead AFANA. If AFANA is valued by the footy community then suitable replacements will step forward. We're quite confident of that and we'll work with any replacements chosen by the organization for a smooth transition.

Yes the main thing is to create an environment in which there are people willing and able to take over, but it's very difficult to do that in a primarily volunteer organisation. Until you actually relinquish the position it's unlikely anyone else will step up.

Even if something does go under after say 13 years (not saying AFANA will), surely it was still 13 worthwhile years? Nothing last forever.
