Just on the OAFL, the AFL website is carrying this story presently A new setting for an old game. I'm not too sure about the final sentiment "As the light starts to fade the banter gets louder. You can’t help but hope that this beer league doesn’t become too professional any time soon." After all - if the guys are aspirational, and if Mike Pyke can stand as a beacon of aspiration, and if the 2 division league structure with around a 14 round H&A season plus finals - - if this sort of scenario can't evolve then - - what hope is there??. So, bugger the 'beer league' I say. Go for it guys!!.

I tend to agree, a social "beer league" is fine, but there is always room for that as a lower grade of a more professional league. I'd love it if in 10 years the OAFL had say 10 top A grade sides, 10 B grade sides, 10 C grade social teams and regular Under 18s and Under 14s. That would be good solid progress.

The article is a bit of a disappointment as it seems to me a little misleading. The OAFL is at a point where it is for the most part long past being a "beer league", i mean we all have a cold frosty one after the game but there is a lot more to it than that. Many of the clubs approach the season and each game with professionalism and a lot of preparation, definitely more than just a social get together. Almost every club practices twice weekly and while some of the players are long in the tooth or a little/alot out of shape many of those types of players are playing in the division 2 (B Grade). Of the top six clubs in the OAFL, 3 have full div2 sides the other 3 have players that have played for other div2 sides or combined sides after not making their div1 side. Should the successful recruiting continue you could see 3 or 4 new division 2 teams added to the competition. in addition to under 18's. Brett's suggestion is quite possible within the next decade. The hard work by the AussieX program which promotes and introduces the game to school children has started to translate into U18s showing up at clubs.
