Tigers and Suns take AFL footy to Cairns

I don't actually like the idea of a northern league, as it weakens the local competitions. However, if it does go ahead and feature Cairns, it would potentially be an excellent pathway for PNG to have players through the Cairns system, and who knows, maybe ultimately their own team in the northern league.

I'd love to see NZ get some kind of team feeding into the Sydney or ACT leagues, perhaps representing South Pacific, since Auckland is basically the capital of the South Pacific with a lot of Polynesians.

Things are looking very bright for footy in most of the Oceania region. It'd be great to get some of that momentum going in Europe, North America and Asia. And where I see as almost untouched potential - South America.

The northern league idea is kinda hamstrung by virtue of the likely inclusion of the various AFL 'reserves' sides - - so, they need a full season with weekly matches.

Otherwise, you could argue the league should be more of a 'premier league' style in some of the overseas style - with a game every 2 or 3 weeks, allowing for a limit on travel and allowing players to return to local leagues in the interim.

However, seeing the continued success of the North Ballarat Roosters in the VFL, that the access for local players to a good standard of effectively rep footy - it's been seemingly very beneficial. Ultimately at local level - in far flung places - if guys can be given a clear pathway then they can play aspirationally as well as competitively and so hopefully that flows back to the local leagues over time. One would hope.
