2010 SANFL Grand Final continues Dogs' dynasty

Interesting that SANFL crowds have been very healthy in recent years at the same time that the AFL crowds for SA's two clubs have been deteriorating quite alarmingly, and at a time when the AFL overall has seen increasing crowds.

There's a lot of theories. For Port the excitement of the early years in the AFL may have diminished, and I'm no fan but I have to be honest and admit that despite Adelaide being a very dry city, it does seem to rain almost every Port home game. There also seems to be a lot of dissatisfaction with the way the game is umpired (or the rules), with people bemoaning the game has changed for the worse. These seems to be more strident in SA than say Victoria, where it is often heard but not as much I think. There's also the criticism of AAMI Stadium, which may at last be addressed by the likely return (after a few decades away) to a redeveloped Adelaide Oval. Other theories include lack of recent premierships (though both teams have been regular finalists), the dominance of soccer as a junior sport, paying the penalty for the decay of the game during the 1980s, live or near-live against the gate TV telecasts, and supporters not happy with the style of footy their teams play.

I don't know, some or all of the above, or something else? Everyone is asking the question, but no one is really sure. The Adelaide Oval redevelopment will probably become seen as the silver bullet.

Your comment about the different style of game played in SANFL to AFL could be very insightful Brett, I noticed one very glaring difference at the SANFL GF the other day, in that there were many classic examples of the players running in and scooping up the loose ball, even a couple of the tall guys picking up one handed. You rarely see that at AFL level now, nearly all players slide in on their knees or stomachs with the resultant stacks-on-the-mill and 4 or 5 players scrabbling and crawling around on the ground on top of each other. Much uglier football than the SANFL brand, fewer melees on the ground and fewer umpire ball ups. Games flow better than the AFL version at the moment. We could almost change the name of the AFL game to "Crawlball" or "Snakeball" with the amount of time the players spend slithering around on the ground, this past year in particular.
