Good point. I've seen games of rugby union before and usually all I see is pile on after pile on after pile on. I may be wrong about this but if something dosn't change thats all we might see in the AFL within the next few years.

Hello Hello. I am a follower of Rugby as well as Aussie Rules. Have played both, probably better as a wing man at rugby than a footballer (any position) because I just had to run with the ball(fast which I could do) and not have to kick the bloody thing.
In Rugby the rules say that the ball has to be got out from under the pile of players as soon as possible(sooner really) and the player pushes it out the back to his fly half so that the game can and does continue. In AFL now it seems to just get caught up under the pack because if the players without the ball can push it back under the pack and keep it there they will get a holding the ball free awarded to them. It has got worse as the head high hit has been emphasised so much lately the lower you can get when attacking the loose ball then the greater chance of getting a free kick if somebody does run or slide into you.
The problem also lies somewhere in the fact that the Rules Committee seem to be obliged to make rule changes every year. Doesn't happen in other sports, at least not every year. An inferiority complex within by the AFL over the years trying to make Aussie Rules as good as the other football sports???
Not that it is a lesser sport, I believe that it is the most spectacular football code in the world, the rest off the world just hasn't caught on yet. They are starting to catch on tho, I reckon.
For the games sake the Rules Committee should only be allowed to actually make rule changes every 2 or even 3 years. They can still study the game to see if a rule might need changing but to actually change the rules continously is ruining the game.

I'm inclined to think the whole "stacks on the mill" issue in the AFL is mainly just a natural consequence of the greater athleticism in the AFL leading to more players getting to the ball at the same time and more overall congestion. I'd like to see a few NAB Cup trials of 16-a-side football - the players cover so much more space these days it makes sense to reduce the players. We might see more one on ones then. That used to be a great feature - two top players going head to head for a loose ball. You still see it occasionally but it is unusual. The great battles of Carey versus Jakovich wouldn't happen these days. And the one on one sprint to a loose ball on the wing was a highlight. And full forwards can't find space, everyone bemoans the end of the 100+ goal full forward era. I think most of that is a natural consequence of the professional modern era. It would be nice to see methods found to address that - there you go, I want some rule changes.

Certainly I still like both AFL and SANFL, but personally the SANFL is obviously slower and less skilful than the national league, as all state leagues are. However, it was a great grand final. I just would've liked to see someone win besides Centrals again! I didn't begrudge them their first 3 or 4, but 9 out of 11 ?!
