International flavour on Brownlow night

To a degree it's tradionally been a midfielders award, note the triple brownlow winners in Skilton, Stewart, Reynolds and Bunton - midfielders.

The 1970s/1980s when many of us grew up threw up some oddities, ruckmen in Moss, Dempsey, Round, Thompson, Moore, Teasedale andlater with Stynes and Wynd. Forwards in Templeton, Lockett and Quinlan, and a 'utility' in Blight and Glendinning who played much of 1983 at CHB because Steve McCann played much of the season at CHF.

From about '93 on when the umpires seemed hellbent on judging players like Ablett and Carey against themselves instead of against mere mortals - we got a lot of possession accumulators winning the Brownlow.

ANd in more modern times, clubs are trying to be less dependent upon 'specialists', no longer wanting to rely on a century goal kicker. The high rotations of midfielders oddly seems to have helped midfielders dominate the awards??? However, this year did see the dominant number 1 ruckman make a 'return'. Perhaps if the bench became 2 plus 2(or3) subs - perhaps more key position players might get back into Brownlow contention??
