PNG U/14s success signals NEAFL future for PNG/Sth Pacific

If PNG could produce a few more quality talls (and I don't mean the PNG definition of tall, which seems to be about 180cm), they would cruise to IC victory every 3 years. But yes if they have a NEAFL side one day then they could recruit from anywhere. Hard to imagine the logistics though - right now not too many guys would want to move to Port Moresby I would think.

That raises an issue about salary caps. Sydney get a higher one in the AFL because the cost of living is higher. But isn't it supposedly an attractive place to live? So why doesn't that result in a downward pressure on their salary spend? Sydney got more than Adelaide, but that just meant they got to lure Kurt Tippett with both money and lifestyle, the latter being just as big a component. (Although you meet expat Sydney people who "escaped" to Adelaide, but they don't tend to be 20-something young men).

So if some places are less desireable that others, as we keep being told, and if the AFL's goal is a level playing field, then perhaps Adelaide should get a salary cap bonus? Not going to happen is it. But the reason I bring that up is that in the NEAFL if you want to send guys to Port Moresby, the capital of a developing nation, you'd need to pay them more than Australian cities. Although the cost of living is much lower and the local players may require less (but if they're good enough they'd easily be lured away to rival clubs if they were less in PNG). Similarly if Tassie get an AFL club, will they find it hard to hold young men against the lure of the bright lights of Melbourne, or worse, Sydney with the lights and the extra cash?

Anyone know how they handle that in other sports like in the US NFL or NBA?

I wonder if a PNG or South Pacific side could be based in any one city or whether the players could be spread out and travel to their match each week without training together? Realistically somewhere has to be home doesn't it? Port Moresby? Or North QLD based in Cairns and PNG/SP based in Townsville? All a fair way off yet but interesting logistics to consider. More likely I would've thought Auckland would become home for South Pacific and PNG separately feed into North Queensland until such time that they are smashing the door down for their own team (both in players and finances).

Moving onto details I would suggest that the PNG follow the NT Thunder example and start off in a Qld competition. Hopefully there could be some involvement with Lae. Possibly their performance could determine thie entry into the NEAFL or possibly the AFL could pay a couple of players as development officers as that really is the numbers required to make a difference. Similarly a NZ/SP team could play out of Auckland but start in the Sydney league until they deserved promotion to the NEAFL.

Discussion of salary setups and caps maybe a little premature IMO, but I will say the original idea of an extra allowance had merit. That was to retain players in Sydney. One other consideration is the ability of low order teams to retain their stars. I believe the GC and GWS experience some retention factor so that is a valid consideration. Obviously a player going to the Swans is thinking possible premiership so he needs no further incentive. That allowance could easily be removed now. The opposite happens when a player is recruited by the Demons. They have the same retention problems as the expansion teams but are not accorded the same luxury. Tthe new enquiry into equalisation might suggest something like this.
