It's sad for Setanta. His whole career seems to have been a matter of so close but so far.

It's accepted he would've been a champion if he stayed in Ireland in hurling. Then at Carlton he slowly developed and I clearly remember one period where he was becoming a very dangerous forward despite it being clear that his teammates still didn't have enough confidence in using him, then when he was running into his best form he backed back for a mark that was his to take and was absolutely smashed by teammate Brendon Fevola. It seemed to me Fev must've seen him but just wanted the chance himself. Setanta was injured and didn't regain his form and then got delisted.

At GWS he did his knee then when returning he had a game where he kicked 5 goals if I recall correctly, in a team that didn't go forward too often. Not sure what happened after that, maybe more injuries, he was out of the team a lot. It seems now injuries and age have caught up with him.

In the end he finished with a solid career, better than most that make it onto AFL lists. But I just thought there were signs that he could've been a bit better than that. Good luck to him whatever comes next in his great journey.
