I agree with you Cam, and in our own little way up we have a small scale analogy to support it. For most of our kids playing in our club they have come from Torres Strait islands or remote communities across Cape York and the Gulf. The culture shock of relocating to a "bustling" city like Cairns could be compared in some ways to a relocation from one country to another. Yet they thrive in this league as a stepping stone to the next level. But after that we have the two options for those wanting to take the next step. One involved the combines which are a pathway to options like the Gold Coast Suns Academy. A couple of my former players took this path with limited success, finding the changes and expectations too great. But recent links with clubs like Masala in Melbourne have seen some of our boys (and more next year) heading south to play in the VAFA as a potential stepping stone to maybe TAC Cup or more. Whilst we were initially enchanted by the AFL endorsed combine/academy options (and we still are, it's just so few can reach that level) we are finding better options to head south on scholarships or straight player exchanges which allow the kids to flourish and grow. In some ways this echoes what you say about international players coming here to play state leagues, or metro/country, to find their feet - combine or no combines. This is obviously a personal viewpoint and not representative of everyone's experience, but it does throw out the question of maybe spending less on international combines and putting into subsidising scholarship, exchange or experiential options. This is not a criticism of the combine ideas (I think they are valid, the players love them and I certainly enjoy going to them), just a way of looking at how things could progress and evolve into the future.

No criticism of the combines intended, but, I do wonder how many of the 'elite' athletes actually go back to play footy in their home countries. I suspect not too many, because they have been sourced/lured from other sports.

Whereas, with the scholarship type set up, these guys are already playing footy in their home country and will go back to playing footy when they go home with their newly acquired skills and experience to pass onto their home club/league.
Can only be all good for the development of footy internationally. Better value for the money spent ????

There is also the added bonus they can always put themselves in the draft. If they're good enough ???? wonders never cease or whatever it is! A couple drafted from twenty or so each year would match what's happening with the Combines now.
