Australian Rules Football - the "rules" is redundant, leaving "Australian Football". The game is indebted to two New South Welshmen and spread rapidly to other Southern Hemishpere colonies including New Zealand. The British undertook an long, arduous and expensive sailing voyage to compete against the colonies in football in both Rugby and colonial rules. The colonial game was much more popular and became ingrained in the structure of the colonies. In the mid 1960s games at state level were immensely popular. In 1965 the population of Australia was half of what it is now. Natural increase was slowing and immigration was increasingly the proponent of population growth, continuing on from post war immigration. In the following 50 years the population increased 11 million which seems to be in line with what I know about immigration figures.

The Australian game is such because it originated in a place now called Australia but it is not owned by Australians. There is no such thing (except in pure residential terms). Each year we (in Australia) are joined by other peoples and each year a good number of these people "discover" Australian Football. The game continues to evolve and spread and ownership does not belong to a historical link but to the people who actively enjoy the game, where ever they may be.
