It's an interesting concept "fairness". We all automatically think it is desirable and necessary especially in sporting enterprise. The AFL has undertaken certain measure to attempt convergance - the salary cap, the draft and the draw however people completely overlook the herd of elephants in the room. Victorian clubs do not travel interstate every fortnight. They do have a great home ground finals advantage. Each year some clubs have a huge resource's head start and those same clubs reinforce that advantage with blockbuster scheduling. Some better clubs have better coaches and players simply because they offer better prospects which is more desirable than pure monetary rewards. Some of these unbalances can be addressed , some cannot and some are just too unpopular to attempt. The COLA has been removed from Sydney when it was seen as no longer necessary. Similarly any advantage of the academies will be removed if they are seen to be of a significant advantage. Overseas draftees will be potentially most advantageous to weathly clubs that can afford to invest in overseas "zones".

The Victorian clubs travel less but, outside of Geelong - each has a very watered down home ground advantage. North Melbourne as an example plays almost exclusively at Etihad - even playing so few 'away' games at the MCG that when contending in an MCG final against Etihad co-tennant Essendon that the bombers have move annual MCG exposure than North. North had finished higher.
During the season the home ground advantage is minimal when playing against the likes of Essendon, Carlton, St Kilda and the Doggies.
No doubt part of the reason a club like North looked to Ballarat and when thwarted there accepted the Hobart offer was that to have a definite home advantage even 2 or 3 times a year must be a bonus.

re the academies, the irony at any time is that McGuire's Pies pillaged the Swans back in the day to get Rocca and Licuria and O'Bree and Buckley from Brisbane. So - the Swans get something in place to nurture local talent and Collingwood whinge about that. In between the NSW Scholarship system was in place and note that Hawthorn managed the relative bargain of Will Langford - not as father son - but as a rookie drafted NSW scholarship player. Collingwood has big Jarrod Witts from this program.

Perhaps the current academy system is a little too difficult for Collingwood to manipulate?

Personally - I see the academy system as critical to help lure local talent into the AFL elite talent pathway. The NSW scholarship scheme was still a little too ad hoc. Clubs in Melbourne trying to develop talent in Sydney just sounds odd.

Ironically again - back to my club North Melb - had they not snared Greg Miller who helped usher messers Carey and Longmire to North Melbourne rather than Sydney - just imagine had they spearheaded a multiple premiership reign up in Sydney alongside Paul Kelly.
