AFL PNG has been building consistantly in recent years and 2013 sees potential further growth in the senior competition which given the numbers participating in junior footy in PNG - it is good to see the Port Moresby senior league consolidating upon that. The following is a press release from AFL PNG.
Preparations have commenced for the 2013 BSP AFLPNG Premiership, and two new teams are on track to join the competition. AFLPNG Senior Football Manager Connie Papau announced today that: “Taurama Diggers and Gulf Isapeas have commenced training and expressed interest in joining the eight team BSP Port Moresby AFL Competition. If all clubs return in 2013, we may have a 10 team competition”.
Last year crowned BSP AFLPNG Champions Moore Printing Tigers are returning in 2013.
The Taurama Diggers are a defence-based team who has been training on a Monday and Wednesday afternoons at the barracks ground.
The Gulf Isapeas have also been training, with most players coming from the Kaugere and Sabama areas. The Isapeas have submitted proposals to AFLPNG that indicate they have a strong sponsorship from Gulf that will enable players to travel from the Gulf on Fridays to join the Port Moresby based team – mates.
Traditional clubs, the Lamana Dockers, SP Defence, Moore Printing University Tigers, BSP Koboni, Hitron Cats and Remington Gordons Kokofas will all be lining up to join the Isapeas and Diggers in 2013.
AFLPNG are waiting on advice from Kwila Boroko and Gerehu Magpies as to their participation in 2013. Time is running out as official team nomination will be close on Saturday 23rd February.
AFLPNG will conduct compulsory club meeting that day (11am – Ori Lavi Haus) to finalize arrangement for the season.
With the generous support of the Bank of South Pacific, training balls and other resources will be distributed at the meeting.
AFLPNG expect to announce within the next week major sponsorship deals for each of the clubs. This will ensure full playing outfit will be available for what promise to be an exciting year in Port Moresby AFL.
Connie Papau said: “A lot of the group just can’t wait to get started, so we will kick off the season with a 12 – a – side competition starting in early March”.
All players wishing to participate in the Kupandas under 19s trial to be held on April 13th must participate in the BSP Pre – Season Cup.
The official season is scheduled to start on Saturday 13 April 2013.
