Europe On Saturday last a Redbacks selection took on an Irish team selection in an effort to boost awareness of Aussie Rules in Ulster (Northern Ireland). The Redbacks are currently considering a move from Belfast to the Mid-Ulster area where most of their player base are from and so players from all over the country descended upon Tyrone's County town, Omagh.

The Redbacks lined out with guests Darren Fitzpatrick (ex Irish Coach and Footscray Bulldog) and Denis Reidy and were ably captained by former national team captain Michael Johnston. The Irish team took the field without the Leeside Lions, and obviously without the squad's Redbacks players.

The first half was a very close affair with the Redbacks up by a few points at the break. In the third quarter the Reds again dominated to extend their lead through an excellent goal. In the final quarter the Irish team finally succeeded in getting some sustained pressure in the Reds backline and managed to squeeze in a couple of decisive scores, the winner being scored with minutes to go. The Irish then had to defend valiantly in order to ensure their victory.

There were some terrific performances on both sides which has given the national team much to talk about. At the function Philip Whelan of the Irish team was presented with Best on Ground and Shaun McElhone of the Redbacks won top goalscorer. Both donated their prizes for a coin pitching competition which raised much needed funds for the Redbacks and the National team.
