The town of Birkerød could soon be home to Denmark's newest Australian Rules club, the Birkerød Bombers. Formed by members of the nearby Farum Cats, the Bombers probably won't be ready for the DAFL next season - but they could have a place in a new developmental league until they've grown to a level where they can compete with the established Copenhagen area clubs.
In plans recently released by the Farum Cats, the proposed Nordsjællands Australske Fodbold Liga (North Zealand AFL) could see a side representing Birkerød-Bistrup compete with Farum-Stavnsholt and Værløse.
The league would initially act as a feeder competition for the Farum Cats, but the eventual goal is for clubs like Birkerød to be able to develop through the league and eventually join the Sjælland conference of the DAFL. It would also replace the Farum Local League, which has existed for the past few seasons, taking over the role of bridging the gap between juniors and senior DAFL footy for young Farum footballers.
There is also the possibility of other clubs entering developmental teams into the league, which could have ramifications for the structure of the entire DAFL. This has been a subject of much debate among the Danish Aussie Rules community - the lack of opportunities for a new club to be competitive having been named as a significant obstacle to expansion of the league.
