After two thrilling draws, Australia defeated Ireland 2.6.15 (45) to 1.6.6 (30) in the deciding Test in Fremantle on 19th April 2006. It was the first series win to Australia in 4 years after Ireland had won in 03, 04 and 05.
As reported in the Adelaide Advertiser Bryce Gibbs (who is the subject of draft controversy under changes to the AFL's father-son rule and not automatically eligible for the Adelaide Crows as the club originally thought) was best player for Australia and Kevin Nolan for Ireland as reported on the GAA site.
Also in Youth International Rules news, the Ron Barrassi medals for Australian and Irish player of the series were awarded retrospectively for the years prior to 2000 when the medals came into being. Aussie Rules fans will recognise some of the winners who have gone on to make their names in the AFL - David Neitz, Joel Corey, Mark McVeigh and when he played for Ireland, Tadhg Kennelly. As reported on the GAA website GAA senior official Pat Daly said: "The series has gone from strength to strength over the past 10 years and it is fitting that one of the pioneers of International Rules football, Ron Barassi, now has an indelible association with the youth series." Barrassi was instrumental in the very first tour of Ireland in 1967 (see International Rules - a surprisingly long history).
