USFooty Top 10: Number 5 Golden Gate Roos

North America WorldFootyNews.com and USFootyNews.com are teaming up to present the 2008 USFooty Top 10 Poll. To kick things off we are having a Top 10 Countdown for the Preseason Top 10. Who are the best teams in USFooty?

Golden Gate Roos are Number 5 in the WFN/USFN Top 10 Poll. The Golden Gate Roos finished 2007 5th in the World Footy News Top 10 Poll with a 2-3 record.

USFooty West Vice-President, Leigh Barnes, was a little disappointed with the Roos season. "We played well against OC last year, but very poorly against San Diego in San Diego. We redeemed ourselves somewhat against the Lions in Louisville, but the result ended up the same, another loss. We were very flat against New York, who played very well by the way, so it was a very disappointing day one. We rebounded very strongly against Chicago on the Sunday, and I think this result was a clearer indication of where we see ourselves as a team and in the end I think we deserved the number 5 ranking."

The Golden Gate Roos are the “representative” team of the Golden Gate Australian Football League (GGAFL). Troy Anthony is tasked with bringing the diverse group together. "Troy has the enthusiasm and desire to unite all of the players from the GGAFL teams, and the capacity to make training sessions a priority for the Roos players. Michael Jobling will coach the Reserves side at the Nationals," says Barnes. Anthony has the Roos traveling to Orange County and hosting the San Diego Lions before heading to Colorado Springs. According to Barnes, "like all teams, we have a few player losses to deal with, and with the new players yet to be evaluated, it is hard to say where we stand. That said, it is time to really stand up and be counted, not to be just a rep team from a strong league, but a legitimate power side that aspires to move into the top echelon of teams in the United States."

The GGAFL is one of the oldest and most established “metro” leagues in the United States. The league has four teams - the San Francisco Knights, the Oakland Pirates (a player pictured below marking against the Knights), the Marin Mavericks and the San Jose Hornets. "This year we have done a few things different to previous seasons. For the first time we have put in a semi final, so as to reward the top team at the end of the home and away games, and to make it more interesting as to who will play off for the championship. As well, instead of playing at only Concord and South San Francisco, we are having our first game in the Marin area. This is part of our push to get us in front of as many different people as possible and to see if that helps us generate more interest in our great game," says Barnes.
