Canadian Team wins US Nationals

The Vancouver Cougars kicked three goals with the strong breeze and one goal against to take a solid victory over the Baltimore Washington Eagles who were only able to kick two goals with the wind. The talls of Vancouver dominated the game, particularly in defense. The Eagles stuck to their game plan of precise passes, but they weren't precise enough and turn overs led to goals in the first half.

It was a pretty big day for Canadian football, with the Calgary Kookaburras beating the Atlanta Kookaburras in the Women's National Championship.

It wasn't all one way for Canada, with the Seattle Grizzlies defeating the Calgary Kangaroos to take the Division II National Championship.

The Division III Championship was won by the Kansas City Power and Division IV winners were the Ohio Valley combine team.

That's an amazing result for Canada, and comes hot on the heels of them finishing above the US at the IC08, and defeating the US in Vancouver last year.

I used to follow the US a lot more closely - I'd imagine this will cause quite a lot of debate. There used to be some who were strongly against Canadian teams competing in the US Nationals since they aren't from the US. It raises all other kinds of issues like I suppose Baltimore-Wash. are the US champions, but without the satisfaction of lifting the Div 1 trophy?

And there have been questions in the past - are Vancouver one club or more a combined area? Same could then be asked of many clubs though.

And where does this leave Canadian footy? It will be interesting to see the goalkickers and best players as they come in - was it the young guns from the British Columbia program that led the way? When was the last time the Canadian western sides took on a side from Ontario, the traditional powerhouse of Canadian footy? How would this Vancouver side stack up?

Also interesting that the Div 2 grand final was contested by the Calgary Kangaroos, another Canadian side, and won by Seattle, from the far NW United States and a regular opponent of the Canadians. It's all a massive shift away from the traditional powerhouses of US football and no doubt a lot of questions will be asked.

Congrats to one of WFN's original writers, Jake Anson, on the great result of the Calgary Kookaburras womens team - he's had a huge role there and to knock off the successful Atlanta team is quite a coup.

Will the US strike back in 2009?

Canada - East Vs West

There has been rumours in Canada about starting an annual East Vs West representative match each year to develop a rivaly between the traditional areas, and strengthen the Northwind program for the next world cup. If it happens, it would provide a great way to ensure that the rapid development of AFL in Canada continues on both sides of the country without the additional costs associated with playing international matches.
