As we move toward the start of the 2009 season, USFootyNews.com will be previewing the Top 10 teams in USFooty as voted in the preseason USFootyNews.com and WorldFootyNews.com poll.
At Number 8 in the Preseason Poll is the Boston Demons. Boston finished the 2008 regular season 2-3. They went 1-2 at Nationals and finished 6th in the last Top 10 poll of the year. That said, they had two big wins during the year. One against New York in New York in the last game of the year and one against 2008 EAFL Premiers, the Baltimore Washington Eagles at Nationals. According to Demons President, Michael Larsen, "We have a strong rivalry with the Eagles and beating them in Colorado Springs was a highlight of our year."
The Demons will have their work cut out for them if they are going to contend with the New York Magpies and the Baltimore Washington Eagles for the 2009 EAFL championship. They play all of their EAFL games on the road and only have one home game for the season. "Travelling for footy has always been a challenge, especially when trying to develop a newer younger team. The economy will certainly add to the woes of travelling, so we will have to see how it turns out," says Head Coach Scott Nicholas.
Part of the reason for the travel is the addition of two tournaments to the EAFL schedule. The first will be in Philly over the weekend of May 30th. The second is scheduled for Washington DC on the weekend of September 12. The Demons heavy travel schedule in 2009 means that they will be at home more than not in 2010.
If Boston is to have a successful 2009 then it will be again relying on the experience and skill of Damien Helem. "Damien Helem had a wonderful season in 2008 and backed up his 2007 Best and Fairest award with another win. Damo is a consummate athlete and I know has started his 2009 campaign already with some strong pre-season fitness work and is hoping for a great year. We have a number of young guys playing their second season with the Demons this year and are very optimistic about their prospects. Two standouts are Joe Fantoni and Paddy Tangney who are both natural athletes and we look forward to seeing them progress," says Larsen.
