The pool rounds of the NAB Australian Under 16's Championships have recently concluded. Queensland, substitute home to many promising Papua New Guinea footballers, had a fantastic tournament. The Scorpions (Queensland team) went undefeated through their three matches. Most of the pool games were played at the Blacktown Oval, the future home of the West Sydney team in the AFL. And looming as PNG's next big thing was talented youngster David Meli.
Meli, 17, also plays for Southport in the AFL Queensland Senior Competition, and received special dispensation from the AFL to be part of the tournament (as an over-age player).
The Scorpions defeated NSW/ACT by 24 points - 8.11 (59) to 4.11 (35) with Meli contributing 2 goals in the first round win. The Scorpions defeated Northern Territory by 46 points in the second round and then played Tasmania in the final round robin match.
Despite being 14 points down at half time against Tassie, the team responded, with Meli slotting 4 majors altogether and being named among the best, to take the win 7.16 (58) to 6.4 (40).
To add icing to the cake the Qld Scorpions will now play the NSW/ACT Rams on Grand Final day at the MCG for the Division Two title of the Championships.
