Eagles soar yet again in 2009 OAFL Grand Final

North America

On October 3rd the Toronto Eagles won their third premiership in four years, defeating the Etobicoke Kangaroos with a complete performance in the 2009 Ontario Australian Football League grand final. The Roos finished the regular season undefeated with 14 wins but the Eagles are one of the most domimant clubs in world footy and to be feared in any premiershio decider.

The day also saw the Quebec Saints travel to Ontario to contest the Division Two flag against the Broadview Hawks' second side.

The first ten minutes were hard and fast with both teams trying to take control of the match. Both times this year the Eagles have been beaten by the Kangaroos pretty convincingly, but from the first bounce it was obvious the Eagles were here to play and held strong in their defense. The Eagles defense only allowed through one major for the quarter, while their forwards kicked two to be up six points at the first change.

The second quarter saw a far more competitive Kangaroos outfit kicking two early goals, but still the Eagles seemed to find the ball in safe hands down forward kicking another five. The match ups just didn’t seem to be working for the undefeated Kangaroos, as they were beaten all around the ground. At the main break the Kangaroos were down by 26 points, while the Eagles where already looking at ways to close the game out.

It was more of the same in the third term as nothing seemed to be working for the Kangaroos, as the Eagles kicked another four goals to their solitary two points. The Eagles backline were rebounding almost every attack and their ruck was also impressive winning a lot of the taps out of the centre.

The game was all but over in the final term, with the Eagles running harder and finishing stronger. The Kangaroos were never really in it after the second quarter and with the first and only goal in the last term by the Eagles, they sealed a comprehensive 57 point victory to take their 12th premiership for the club.
