Wandsworth Demons - celebrating two decades of footy in style

Europe

One of the fantastic benefits of an enduring sports club is an active social scene - the chance to make new friends, catch up with past players and celebrate another year of enjoying sport. Few are the clubs in any sport which do not take the chance to get together annually and enjoy an evening of banter and reminiscence.

The Wandsworth Demons are no exception and, at the 20th anniversary of the club's beginnings, it was decided that this should be something special - a celebration of two decades of footy in the English capital - held in the Crown Casino, on the other side of the world in Melbourne at the end of October.

Firmly rooted on Clapham Common in the heart of London, this was always going to be an ambitious plan, particularly considering that not only Brits and Aussies have represented the club, but players from a host of other countries as well, some still in London, others now back in their home nations or spread across the globe. Brits, Irish, Danes, Germans, Czechs and French, as well as Aussies, Kiwis and even some Americans have graced the hallowed turf, wearing the Demons' jersey with pride and many of these players descended on Melbourne for an awesome reunion experience.

For a year prior, planning was in progress on both sides of the world and culminated in an unforgettable event for the 180 plus people who travelled to Melbourne. Amongst the throng were club presidents, life members, numerous players and the icing on the cake - club founders Sean Angle and Craig Stephens, reunited after 15 years. Timed to coincide with Melbourne Cup weekend, the dinner and 3 days of following barbeques and catch-ups were celebrated in style, in a truly awesome undertaking, enjoyed by all in attendance.

Well done to one of the UK’s biggest clubs on an event that will be remembered by all who attended. To find out more and see photos from the event, please visit http://www.wandsworthdemons.com
