US Revolution kick off in Texas

North America

The US Revolution kicked off their 2010 season with a winter camp in Austin, Texas. New head coach, Matt Bishop, was keen to get the team together with a series of camps throughout the year culminating with the big game against the Canadian Northwind in Toronto in early August.

There were a number of new faces looking to impress the Revo coaching staff, including Minnesota's big man, Andrew Werner. Werner spent much of 2009 playing footy in the Western Australian country leagues and is looking forward to contributing to the Revos.

According to Werner, "I think the year looks really good. We have a few guys coming back this year after playing a year in Australia, and it will be great to have their enthusiasm for the sport introduced into an already dedicated Revolution team. It seems as if there are a lot of guys who are interested in being named in the side, and hopefully this will bring a very strong sense of competitive spirit to the next few Revo meetings, including the upcoming match against Canada."

"Hopefully all of the guys from this weekend and everybody else who is interested in the team can maintain a steady level of communication about how each other are going with their respective teams, how they are improving, and about what the coaches are thinking about game strategies. I'm hoping come August we'll be able to bring together a skillful, experienced, and most importantly a fit side into Toronto to show everybody that the Red,White, and Blue mean business come the 2011 International Cup."

Werner was happy swap the Minnesota winter for the Texas one. "Not only was it great to be somewhere somewhat warm, but the city of Austin was awesome. There were so many people out and about and taking in the weekend air. Where we were training, there were hundreds of people out playing every sport imaginable, people with dogs, and guys flying around RC airplanes. It was also great to get out see a bit of the Austin nightlife as well."

But Werner was in Austin for the footy and was very impressed with the weekend. "I thought the camp went very well. It was a pretty full on weekend of footy and we got a lot done. It was good to see so many guys there that are all committed to making themselves and the Revolution team better by paying their own way to get down to Austin. It was also great to get and finally meet some of the guys. This was my first Revolution team event and I was really excited for it. I didn't quite know what to expect, and the coaches did a really good job of welcoming in all of the new players and including each individual in on the team strategy and training sessions."

"I'm really looking forward to the next upcoming Revo matches as it will be good to get as much playing experience with all of the other guys to learn how to play with each other and to see where the players will likely play during the International Cup."
