As the Ontario Australian Football League (OAFL) regular football season goes on hold this weekend for Canada's long weekend, May 24, a group of OAFL bandits entitled the OAFL Awfuls are set to hit the road down to Boston, Massachusetts.
The team will be participating in 2 matches on Saturday May 22nd against the US sides of the Boston Demons and the Baltimore Eagles.
After a freak occurence when Hamilton Wildcat player Daniel Crouch met the Boston Demons coach in New York in January, the event kind of steam rolled from there after Crouch put Wildcats President , Tim Wilson, in touch with the Demons.
"It began as a "maybe" event in that we would be purely taking the Hamilton Wildcat team down for an exhibition game pre season.
With the OAFL schedule beginning so early it became a null event, but the suggestion came up as to head down on the May 24 weekend.
From there it all just spliced together consisting of designing and ordering jumpers for the event (Pictured), arranging players from all teams within the OAFL to partake, booking hotels, organising flights for some players wanting to fly, trophies, beer mugs etc.
The OAFL Awfuls side also has a trainer, umpires and a team photographer also committed to the trip.
"With only a few days to go, I know the boys heading down are pumped for the trip!" said Tim Wilson earlier today. The jumper design signifies both nationalities, with the maple leaf and the Southern Cross both represented on the guernsey.
A majority of the team will head down on Friday afternoon/night for a jumper presentation at a local pub and the 2 matches will be played on the Saturday before a function involving all teams to be held on Saturday night.
