The inaugural European Legion squad has been named to take on Australia's youth when the AFL/AIS Academy tours Europe in April. The day will also see Ireland's Warriors take on the British Bulldogs, in what will no doubt be a crucial match for players heading to IC11 in August.
As reported on the AFL Europe website, the European Legion Squad to face the AFL/AIS Academy in London on April 23rd contains representatives from Croatia, Denmark, England, France, Ireland, Scotland, Sweden and Wales. The team will be coached by AFL Europe Commissioner and former Melbourne Demons Player, Glenn Lovett. Glenn will be assisted by visiting coach Brett Kirk and Daniel Maclaer from Sweden. 24 players were invited to participate, with one player Sylvain Maylie having to decline his invitation. His place in the squad has been taken by Sam Brunton from England. The Squad is as follows.
The European Legion
Luka Cudina – Croatia | Eoin Carroll – Ireland |
Adam Loncar – Croatia | Ken Fernee – Ireland |
Mathias Biron – Denmark | James Laverty – Ireland |
Chris Campion – Denmark | David McElhone – Ireland |
Nathan Campion – Denmark | Darren McGeever – Ireland |
Morten Merhoj – Denmark | Paul Sharry – Ireland |
Jonas Nielsen – Denmark | Thomas Exton – Scotland |
Danny Armitage – England | Angus McIntosh – Scotland |
Adam Ballard - England | Emil Aberg – Sweden |
Sam Brunton – England | Hampus Olsson – Sweden |
Sam Gill – England | Joshua Davey – Wales |
Wilfried Houvion – France | Rhys Morgan - Wales |
The match will take place at the Bank Of England Sports Centre in Roehampton, London. The game, which will be the main event of a double header of games, will commence at 3PM at the venue and will be preceded by an International Match between the British Bulldogs and the Irish Warriors, which will commence at 1PM.
As reported earlier, the Legion was to be composed mainly of U-21 Players from the various European Leagues with a limited number of U-23 players to add senior experience, and we assume that is reflected in the final squad.
