39 players still in the hunt for NZ Hawks

The NZ Hawks will soon finalise their travelling squad of 26 players for the 2011 International Cup. Pleasingly the average age has continued to decrease from 25 in 2002, to 23 in 2008 to around 21 for 2011. What any youth-focused programme would wish to see is that players will ‘buy in’ to the sport and continue through to the seniors. With 18 players graduating from previous NZ Hawks Under 16 and Under 20 NZ teams can be happy that this is being achieved, as that represents 46% of the squad.

There is only one player of the 2002 squad looking to return nine years later and that is key forward Richard Bradley who was one of five teenagers in that team. He again returned in the 2005 Champion team and his team mates from then David Cory-Toussaint and Andrew Marsden are part of the extended squad. Eight players in total from the 2008 squad are hoping to return, which is just under a third. I would expect that that is fairly standard across the board for all the nations.

The squad currently comprises 21 from Auckland, 11 from Canterbury, 4 from Waikato and 3 from Wellington - giving a wide geographical spread across the nation.

The final squad will be decided after a camp this weekend, with other training camps to follow in Mid June and Mid July.

brendon clark plays in our league and aginst us a few weeks back stood out a fair bit. kicked a bunch of goals from the backline. was talking to him after the game and aparently there are a few players from the kiwis who are signed by afl clubs which is good to hear,could be some alright footy to watch.

Would be good to see them play some australian teams at some stage , even if just lower league teams ,trans tassy games would get a few people watching.

I'm guessing from your email address that you play for Narooma in the Sapphire Coast AFL? I reckon NZ would be prime candidates for some games against Australian bush or suburban clubs, they hosted Maffra a few years back when Maffra were one of the better sides in country Vic (though to be fair, Maffra beat them by a pretty huge margin). What might also be an option would be some interleague action between the NZAFL and maybe NSW bush leagues like Sapphire Coast, Tamworth, Central West etc... If NZ could also pick expat Aussies for matches like this (which might be fair given that there'd be at least a few Vic/SA/WA 'expats' in most NSW bush league rep squads) then they might be genuine contenders.

Yea mate Narooma's my club -Dont play anymore but follow the boys around, we have a young side this year so are struggling against a few of the other clubs but in a few years with some experience we'l be competitive again.

I think that you hit it on the head, if they can start to have regular games over here against the likes of bush leauge teams it will not only help them develope the game but it will give locals a chance to watch international games and see how footy is coming along overseas.

How much assistance is the afl giving other countries in growing the game? the more the game can become a international game the better. Its the one aspect where league and soccer have an advantage.

Haha, the question that stokes endless debate. How much does and how much should the AFL spend on international development?

According to some people far too much and according to some people far too little.

I'd estimate that about 5 years ago, in terms of direct investment (dollars and mechandise) and staff time probably $500,000 per year. That's a very rough estimate. Now on top of that they helped some bodies like AFL South Africa leverage much greater investment. Plus leveraging investment such as Indigenous tours etc. So all up that probably got above $1 million but not direct AFL money.

Now in 2011, with small direct investment to a growing number of nations, more significant to a few nations, the AIS tour to Europe, assisting with the World XVIII and South Pacific Under 16 teams, helping with the Oceania Cup, funding a position with AFL Europe, having Tony Woods in a full time position at the AFL, other staff contributing some time, funding Andrwe Cadzow with AFL Asia Pacific, and running the International Cup, then I'd guess the total direct investment would be above $1 million. Plus the additional leverage and deals etc.

Under the new TV deal everyone has their hand out, and I worry just how much the AFL players will take, but it would certainly be nice to see a specific and growing international development budget up around two or three million per year. We'll certainly ask the questions.

Just looking over the squad, there is a massive turnover. Now this is good because younger players are coming to aussie, but I just hope that the players from 02/05/08 teams are still either playing, coaching or managing in local teams. NZAFL can only get better if these senior players give back to the system that served them so well over the years. Good Luck Hawks!
