This saturday sees Port Moresby hosting the 'big one' with the 2012 Grand Final of the AFLPOM. Amini Park will be a hive of activity all day with the junior Grand Final first bounce at 9 am.
The Senior Grand Final is set for a 1.30 pm start and sees the Remington Gordon's Kokofas take on the Moore Printing Uni Tigers. The match is the culmination of a competitive season with some of the stars of AFL PNG on show - including a number of players quite familiar to WFN regulars. The standard is sure to be high with the Tigers having had the week off while the Kokofas will take great confidence from their finals campaign thus far.
The first week of finals saw the Kokofas win well over the SP Brewery Defence (12.9.81 to 6.10.46) to advance to the preliminary final whilst ending the season for the Defence team. The Tigers had a hard faught tussle with the Bomana Hitron Cats (5.6.36 to 3.11.29) giving the Tigers direct passage into the Grand Final and a weeks rest.
Last week saw the Kokofas taking on the Bomana Hitron Cats in the preliminary final with the Kokofas taking out the game 11.10.76 winning to 8.5.53.
Both teams boast a wealth of talent and experience and their form all year sees both deserving of their places in the Grand Final.
The Kokofas midfield is marshalled by Lai Lai Ila who is a highly skilled ball magnet. The defence is lead by James Lionel Yogomin. WFN readers would be well aware of Brendon Beno who recently returned from the AFL Draft Combine in Melbourne, and is of course a Scholarship player at the Brisbane Lions. Also, Ali Pinda who was a solid member of the 2011 IC squad and has had a stint with Coolangatta in Queensland has returned for the second half of the AFL POM season.
The TIgers boast John James who has 4 years of experience through the AFLQ and NEAFL. JJ Peni is a reliable half back and member of the South Pacific U/16 side this year. Lawrie Logo is an AFLPNG Scholarship holder who has also had a stint with Redlands in the NEAFL. Scott Johnson, at only 17, is already an excitement machine capable of a big mark despite not being overly tall.
The day includes activities and an old boys match - see the flyer.
