AFL PNGs new role

Oceania

AFLPNG is perhaps the brightest burning beacon of Australian Football development pathways outside of Australia. And so, the appointment last week of Cornelius “Connie” Papau into the newly created position of Operations Manager: Senior Football for AFL PNG heralds a further step forward for an organisation that has been steadily developing in recent years.

The following press release from AFL PNG serves as a useful introduction of Connie and a description of his role.

Papau’s new role will focus on the development and administration of Senior AFL across the country. With experience playing in senior competitions in Lae, Mt Hagen and Port Moresby, he has the knowledge to do the job.

On top of his playing experience he has filled a number of roles within AFL PNG over the last nine years. He gained valuable knowledge working and playing football in Australia.

Papau commenced work with AFLPNG as a junior development office in 2004. That year he coached the inaugural Coca-Cola Under 14 Binatangs in the Queensland Country Championship. Since that time he has spent time all over the nation developing the code.

AFLPNG and Papau’s immediate focus is the Port Moresby Senior Competition for 2013. Papau will spend the next few weeks consulting the clubs and planning a program for the season.

Papau said, “I am so excited about this new role and looking forward to work with the clubs to assist in their development and making sure we have a strong and well organised competition”.

“I have already had some interest from new clubs wanting to join. Kerema have expressed an interest in participating after we ran some school clinics there last year. We have had some very good players coming from that region”.

“But at the moment my focus is the existing clubs and helping them get up and running for the year”.

Papau will also be responsible for senior competition in Lae, Kimbe and Mt Hagen. Other regions wishing to commence senior competition should contact Connie Papau on 76550195 or the AFLPNG office on Ph:3254943 or email:admin@afl-png.com.
