Reigning Brownlow Medalist Gary Ablett Junior and his brother and Geelong Premiership player Nathan Ablett will be in Port Moresby this week. They will be undertaking various activities for their church group, and it's charity - The Gateway Children's Fund.
Gary Jnr and Nathan will conduct clinics at Wardstrip Elementary and Bavaroko Primary School during the week.
The Gold Coast Suns Captain and his brother will also visit Taurama Barracks on Tuesday afternoon to take the Under 13, under 15 and under 18 Taurama Suns (4pm-5pm) for a training run. The Taurama Suns seniors will train from 5pm.
The MoniPlus Taurama Suns won this years inaugural Kokoda Memorial Cup after defeating the Defence side during the regular season this year. The Suns progressed through to the senior finals but fell short against the Digicel Gordons Kokofas in the preliminary final this season. For the record Lamana Dockers had a comfortable victory as reported by The National (Tues Sep 17) over the Kokofas. It should be noted the match was umpired by none other than AFL Development officer Ben Drew along with fellow Aussie experienced umpire Peter Folley.
As (Two New Teams in BSP POM AFL Competition) reported earlier this year, the Taurama side started out speculatively as the Diggers before rebadging as the Suns. Making the preliminary final in their debut season was indeed a fine effort.
Gary Jnr has played 253 games since his debut in 2002. 192 for Geelong and since 2011 a further 61 for the Gold Coast Suns. He was a member of the 2007 and 2009 Geelong premiership sides and has twice won the AFL's Brownlow medal having done so in 2009 and again this year for the Suns. The younger Nathan walked away from the AFL after 32 games and 3 goals in a premiership in 2007. He returned to the AFL for season 2011 with the Suns and added 2 games late in the season however was delisted at seasons end.
