BC Footy is thrilled to announce Burnaby lakes will host the Canadian nationals this year on May 21-22.
The innaugural installment of the tournament will feature men's and women's teams from across Canada competing for national bragging rights. The Canadian Nationals will be a competition between provinces rather than clubs.
Selection trials have already been carried out across Canada to determine selection of the men's and women's teams. British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Atlantic will be the competing teams - with the Atlantic team being made up of players from Ottawa, Montreal, Sherbrooke, Quebec City, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.
The new setup should be able to bring together the geographically isolated players from across the country and improve the setup and cohesion of the national team ahead of next year's 2017 International Cup.
Adam Kelly, BC Footy President said he was delighted with the outcome. "It's very difficult securing quality fields for games and tournaments in BC - there just aren't that many around that are big enough for footy" Kelly said. "With the Burnaby deal we not only have one but two top quality grass fields with great access and ammenities."
Kelly added he was grateful to Burnaby City for playing such a critical role making the fields available and supporting Australian Rules Football in BC. "We've been working with Burnaby City now for more than ten years and we couldn't be more impressed with their professionalism and open mindedness to a sport many folks here are unfamiliar with."
