The new 2016 ARFLI (Australian Rules Football Ireland) is underway with round two of the series of round robin carnivals having been played at Cork, home of the Leeside Lions. The revised format has been designed to ease some of the travel burden and associated costs for clubs. Each carnival will also feature a women’s clash with local and/or travelling teams involved.
The concept will see each team play two matches of two twenty minute halves, which constitutes two rounds of the season. So after two carnivals (four rounds), the Leeside Lions are the only undefeated team and lead the way so far. The opening carnival was hosted by the South Dublin Swans at Bushy Park, Tenenure. The Lions won both of their clashes, as did the Belfast Redbacks.
Lions 8.8 (56) beat Swans 1.2 (8)
Belfast Redbacks 8.4 (52) Galway Magpies 5.4 (34)
Belfast Redbacks 10.3 (63) South Dublin Swans 3.2 (15)
Lions 9.8 (62) beat Magpies 3.5 (23)
The second carnival (Rounds 3 & 4) was played in Cork and hosted by the Leeside Lions.
Leeside Lions 12.10 (82) d Galway Magpies 1.3 (9)
South Dublin Swans 5.8 (38) lost to Belfast Redbacks 7.1 (43)
Leeside Lions 14.11 (95) d Belfast Redbacks 2.0 (12)
South Dublin Swans 9.5 (59) d Galway Magpies 6.4 (40)
So, after four completed rounds, the ladder sees:
Leeside Lions (Wins) 4 (Losses) 0
Belfast Redbacks (Wins) 3 (Losses) 1
South Dublin Swans (Wins) 1 (Losses) 3
Galway Magpies (Wins) 0 (Losses) 4
The next carnival will be held in Galway on June 11th and will give a huge boost to the home team as they seek their first wins of the 2016 season and Both the Redbacks and Swans try to peg back the Lions’ domination.
