To borrow a phrase from Wallace & Gromit, Galway footy fans were treated to a “Grand Day Out” when the Galway Magpies hosted Rounds 5 and 6 of the 2016 ARFLI season. It was the third carnival day for ARFLI fixtures, following on from previous carnivals held in Dublin and Cork. Whilst the off field entertainment was regarded as a delight, so was the performance of the Magpies on the field with two wins from their two matches, seeing them claw their way off the bottom of the ladder.
The Leeside Lions also enjoyed their day with two strong wins from their two matches, downing both the South Dublin Demons and the Belfast Redbacks. The Swans and Redbacks had days they would rather forget, neither winning a match for the day.
The results see the powerful Leeside team remain undefeated with six wins from their six starts. The Belfast Redbacks now sit in second place with three wins and three losses, just ahead of the Galway Magpies on two wins and four losses. The South Dublin Swans now sit in fourth place with just one win from their six matches to date.
With two remaining carnivals to come in Dublin and Belfast, constituting Rounds 7 to 10, there is still time for all teams to get a run on before the semi-finals on July 23rd and the Grand Final on August 8th. But at the moment the Leeside Lions are going to take a lot of stopping as they power onwards and flex their muscle against all other teams.
Results:
Galway Magpies 9-2-56 d South Dublin Swans 5-5-35
Galway Magpies 9-2-56 d Belfast Redbacks 6-3-39
Leeside Lions 11-10-76 d South Dublin Swans 1-0-6
Leeside Lions 7-3-45 d Belfast Redbacks 3-3-21
Ladder:
Leeside Lions (W) 6 (L) 0
Belfast Redbacks (W) 3 (L) 3
Galway Magpies (W) 2 (L) 4
South Dublin Swans (W) 1 (L) 5
