Finals time has well and truly arrived across all Scandinavian countries. Finland and Norway have seen their finals decided whilst major leagues in both Sweden and Denmark have finished their home and away seasons and now prepare for the biggest matches of the season. Following is a brief overview of each competition to date.
Norway: After a dominant season, the Oslo East team has taken out the 2016 Kenguru Cup, downing cross town rivals, Oslo West. The “Beast From The East” had dominated the season and few held out hope the West could produce a monumental upset, but in the end the script was followed to the letter as East played to their potential and took the 2016 crown. Final score was East 77 to West 6. The Ås Battlers finished the season in third place.
Finland: The Helsinki Heatseekers recently downed the Turku Dockers to take the FAFL premiership for 2016. Throughout the season, the Heatseekers had been seen to be the premiership favourites but had been defeated by Turku along the way. But come the final match of the season it was the Helsinki Heatseekers that won the day. This sees them claiming back to back flags and will plan now to continue that dominance into 2017.
Sweden: A final round forfeit by the Solna Axeman gave the points to the Södermalm Blues and as a result saw the Blues go straight to the Grand Final, passing the Norrtälje Dockers on for and against to take the minor premiership. The Blues will now await the semi-final result between the Dockers and the Årsta Swans to see which team they will meet in the Grand Final on September 24th. After having lost four grand finals in a row (2011-2014), the Blues won last year and now have the chance to go back to back in 2016.
Denmark: The Odense Lions have reached the finals for the first time in their club’s short history and did so with a resounding win against the Helsingborg Saints by 220 points. They will go into their semi-final next weekend against top team and early premiership favourites, the Copenhagen Barracudas. The other semi-final will see the Farum Cats taking on the Port Malmö Maulers. The winners will meet each other in the DAFL Grand Final on September 24th.
