Alexey Andryushin from the St Petersburg Cats is a keen student of history, and is very aware of how important this weekend’s clash between the Lazy Koalas and the Cats was. “The weather was perfect: no rain and no hot sun either, and the day of this game matched the Moscow City day - today was the 869th anniversary of Moscow (est. 1147).”

The culmination of the first full season of competition between the two cities is certainly an historical event in European footy – maybe not on the same level of the history of the nation’s iconic capital city, but certainly of historical importance in the growth of the Australian national game across Europe.
Alexey went on to say that “it was definitely a good game, and the Koalas got revenge on us after their May loss in St Petersburg. We scored a fast first goal, but right after that Koalas fought back, and during first two quarters there was a gap between the teams of about 15 points. Then the Koalas managed to develop their lead further, and the final score was 87 to 47 in favour of home team.”

“Except for our own teams' fans, there were also a bunch of rugby players who had a training [session] on the field right before our game, and a big group of people having different physical activities such as running and gymnastics, so there was a good crowd there to witness the match. The match had a great, friendly atmosphere, everyone enjoyed it, and there was also a good ‘fifth quarter’ at the local pub.”

Founder of the Lazy Koalas, Mikhail Artemyev also added, “the weather was perfect! The Cats started out with a 6-0 lead but then we scored 3 goals in a row and developed our advantage more and more. Stanislav Prosyanik was the Most valuable Player from our team.”

The Lazy Koalas completed this year’s tournaments 2-1 winners with results going with the home teams. The results set the scene for further development over the winter months of recruitment and a chance to take the game to a higher level in 2017.

“Now Cats and Koalas are making all necessary preparations and getting ready to play as Team Russia in Euro Cup on October 8th in Lisbon, Portugal.”
