The Glasgow Sharks’ successful season went one step further last weekend when they visited Newcastle to take out the 2016 Tyne Tees Cup. Just last month the Glasgow Sharks took out the AFL Scotland premiership - Glasgow Sharks Crowned AFL Scotland Champions – and the trip south has netted them another trophy for the cabinet.
The competing teams for this year saw the Glasgow Sharks, Tyne Tees Tigers and Scotland’s Kingdom Kangaroos in the men’s competition. In the women’s draw the England Vixens took on the Wandsworth Demons and the Glasgow Sharks.
In the final of the men’s competition, the Sharks were too good for host team, Tyne Tees Tigers, running out winners 75 to 51.
In the women’s final, the England Vixens downed the Wandsworth Demons from London in convincing fashion 52 to 1. The match was an ideal preparation for the Vixens as they get ready to travel to Portugal and represent their country at the Euro Cup in Lisbon.
The tournament all but brings an end to the 2016 seasons for most clubs as they turn their attention towards preparations for the 2017 season. Some players from the teams present will be part of the Scottish and English national teams. For the Tyne Tees Tigers, the event was a great full stop to their first season at their new home at the Gosforth Sports Association and adding further to the growth of the club.
Congratulations go to all teams for travelling and competing and also to the Tyne Tees Tigers for hosting and organising the event which brought together one national team as well as teams representing the AFLCNE, AFL Scotland and AFL London.
