Travis King from www.afl.com.au reports that Essendon’s young Irish recruit, Conor McKenna, has signed a new deal which will see him on the Essendon senior list for 2017. The signing provides a great platform for McKenna to launch a long-term career with the Bombers.

NORTHERN Irish speedster Conor McKenna will remain at Essendon next season after inking a fresh one-year deal.

After playing 12 games this season, the former Category B rookie has also been rewarded with elevation to the senior list in 2017.

McKenna has shown some positive signs playing in defence and attack since he burst onto the scene with a goal from his first kick in the AFL against Richmond in round 22 last year.

The 20-year-old played the final eight games this season, gathering a career-best 22 touches and booting two majors against Gold Coast in round 21.

"I've really enjoyed my time at the Bombers so far and am looking forward to what we can achieve under Woosha's (John Worsfold) leadership," McKenna said.

"Since arriving at the club, I've worked really closely with the coaches to fast-track my development as much as possible and am really happy with the way things are progressing.

"I've learnt a lot this season, and I can't wait to get back into training ready for 2017."

The County Tyrone product hails from a Gaelic football background and has impressed the Bombers with his athleticism.

"Conor is an exciting and powerful player with a natural athletic talent who has worked really hard to understand and learn our game," Worsfold said.

"We were particularly pleased with his form in the VFL this season and the last couple of weeks in the AFL so we are looking forward to what he can produce for 2017 and beyond.

"He always brings plenty of energy and intensity with his exceptional speed and endurance and we believe Conor has a bright future as a Bomber."

McKenna has played 14 games and booted five goals.
