Before the scores start appearing, I'm guessing Ireland very comfortably over Sweden, Finland narrowly over Iceland, Germany narrowly over Croatia (but lack of numbers might change that) and maybe, just maybe, Denmark over Great Britain, with home town advantage and a fairly inexperienced GB side.

Just putting this out there - Denmark beat Iceland by 20 goals, Great Britain on the other hand only beat the Ravens by about 40 points. Wait and see, but I reckon the Danes will be going in favourites.

I think Denmark will win this easily. The current GB squad is not a patch on the 2008 International Cup GB squad which had a closely fought battle with Denmark.

Congratulations to Iceland and Croatia on their maiden 16-a-side victories!

So, to recap, the games for Saturday are:

Gold medal: Ireland vs Denmark
3rd place: Great Britain vs Sweden
5th place: Croatia vs Iceland
7th place: Germany vs Finland

Also looking forward to what Cam and Brett come up with on the World Rankings, with the added info from the EC2010.

Regarding our rankings, I'll have some more preliminary discussion for us to look over soon. Having had a chance to put some further analysis and test data into them, my feeling is that they are still a work in progress with some pretty fundamental issues that risk being exacerbated over time rather than fade. So I'm unsure whether we'll definitely go with them as our firm rankings or a "beta release".

A disappointing 2 out of 4 from me. I wonder whether Germany were hurt by lack of numbers or if this truly reflects that Croatia can stake a claim as having gone past them. Iceland knocking off Finland was very interesting - that's a big breakthrough for them.

If the AFL do separate the IC2011 into two divisions of say a top 8 and then the rest, my guess was that Great Britain would be seeded towards the bottom of Div 1 and Denmark and Sweden would be at the top of Div 2. Now that the Danes have defeated the Bulldogs and will finish higher in this major tournament just a year from IC2011, it will be interesting to see if these results change anything. Perhaps one match doesn't change everything, but you have to put your best foot forward at the European Championships. It's difficult to understand the suggestion that some of Britain's players chose club football over representing their country.

Only 1 player in the GB side that played in the win over Denmark last year. Probably a couple of reasons for this. The clash of the tournament with the AFL London finals is unfortunate. The main issue is the requirement for premiership teams to field 9 EU players and the conference to field 2. Clubs really can’t afford to lose their British players. That said, I don’t think the clubs would have put any pressure on the players to stay. Finance plays a big part as well. Blokes looking ahead to the IC will be saving really hard for that and the trip this year would be stretching them.

What this has done is opened up opportunities for new guys to impress, and given the big wins in the first 2 games, I’m sure many have. Also highlights the growth of British footy over the last couple of years, especially in the regional leagues. Not sure how many other EU nations would be able to draw on such depth.

Not sure which was scheduled first, but I don't entirely understand why the AFL London didn't reschedule their finals, if it meant that the GB team at the Euro championships was going to be understrength.

It does reflect however that the British have the greatest depth of numbers, with the clubs spread across regional England, Wales and Scotland.

Regarding Croatia vs Germany, the Croats have been roughly level with or ahead of the Germans at previous EU Cups, plus they don't have a much bigger squad than Germany (if it's bigger at all), so they can probably lay claim to legitimately being ahead of them. They also have worked hard to get three 9-a-side teams up and running in their domestic competition, also in the Zagreb metro area, so they can play plenty of footy locally throughout the year.

Germany's problem is that the national league becomes expensive to play in - simply because the clubs are spread so far apart. People can't commit to the national team, because they've already spent a lot of money travelling in the domestic season. It also makes it hard to recruit for club footy.

A few people have said to me that for them to progress, initiatives like Munich's Bayern League are the way forward, to get people playing footy regularly on a local level.

Also, don't underestimate Iceland, they're captained by a world team rep in Pall Finnsson and they performed well at the EU Cup last year without any Aussies :)

I reckon they were probably favourites going in against Finland.

My tips for the finals ranking after Saturday's games:

Have to ditto the Congrats on Iceland and Croatia's first wins in 'Full Scale" Footy.
I also have to agree on the ranks after the final, but also agree, don't underestimate Iceland. They have appeared to have performed very well considering they have been going less than 2 years.

The results so far have reflected very well the ratings of the teams in the proposed ranking scheme, taking into account that there are 2 new comers entering the scheme.

After the 3 rounds so far the ranks look like:

If the rankings are to form then Germany should defeat Finland, Croatia over Iceland(but this can anyway really as both teams are provisional), Great Britain over Sweden and Ireland should reign supreme over Denmark. All 4 games will test the system I think.

I know the EC2010 was first mentioned in Croatia last year and confirmed in Frankfurt earlier this year in January. I believe the AFL Londons fixtures are pretty much the same each year, but its seems strange they couldnt make a two weekend hiatus to make room for the EC2010. I guess all leagues at different levels struggle to organise a trip more than 4 hours drive away from home, for the British side, it seems their structure and history has led to club footy being their no 1.

I agree it shows GB's depth which is quite impressive, and it will give the coaches a good look at some of the new talent, and thanks Kurt your explanation shows why the clubs would be keen to hold onto their players.

But I'm also curious like Aaron as to why the AFL London finals weren't scheduled differently or re-scheduled - if all the nations of Europe are going to support the European Championships then such scheduling issues need to be avoided. I'm sure there are reasons like field availability etc, but certainly Denmark would have a good argument to be ranked above GB now - as the saying goes, you can only beat the opposition that you play on the day. Note that GB isn't making any excuses as far as I know, we're just discussing the reality of why their team is clearly not drawn from the same pool as in the past.

And I note that it was a pretty comfortable win by the Danes as well. Sometimes the home team under-performs because so much effort goes into organising things. It looks like Denmark have managed to avoid that problem, perhaps another good sign that they have the critical mass to organise such a tournament (with Sweden) and still have the resources to focus on the footy.

Having both DK and Swe host the event meant a great deal for the organisation. The players have still helped out a lot on press releases, planning, sourcing and were important in the match day preparations and cleaning up. Only a good effort from both players and the local club personel has helped the teams succeed so far.
