Afl Europe has proudly announced that a record 21 teams are confirmed for the 2014 Axios Euro Cup to be held in London on October 4th at the London Irish Rugby Club. With confirmations now in from competing clubs, the day will feature 16 men’s teams and 5 women’s teams.

This is a huge increase on the 14 teams which attended last year’s event in Bordeaux, France.

For the 2014 event the men’s teams from England, Austria, Croatia, Spain, Norway, Italy, Ireland, France, Catalunya and the European Crusaders are returning to re-engage in battle from last year. Their numbers are boosted with the inclusion of the Scottish Clansmen, Flying Dutchmen from the Netherlands, The German Black Eagles, Welsh Dragons, Swedish Elks and Denmark Vikings.

The teams from Finland and Iceland will not be returning for the 2014 event.

The women’s draw is where the greatest growth has been. Not only will the France Les Gauloises return from last year, they will be joined by the Irish Banshees as well as new teams, the England Vixens, Danish Valkyries and the Scotland women’s team.

The 2013 Axios Euro Cup, played in Saint Médard en Jalles in Bordeaux saw England convincingly defeat France for the Cup. Croatia and Italy also performed well to finish in third and fourth places. Ireland will be out for redemption this year. In 2013 they went down in their round match to France by one point, meaning they missed out on contesting the cup but did take out the Euro Bowl. Austria took out the Euro Plate.

This year’s event in London is already huge just in terms of the number of nations and teams attending. Come the day this event is sure to be enormous as teams attempt to assert their authority, redeem last year’s efforts, improve their standing or just simply play for the first time and make their own statement for the future.
