Surprising they took the risk, but you'd expect them to be rewarded for taking the punt (pardon the pun). Quite possibly they took the risk based on how well the previous Australians have gone - they know he's similar to the previous punter, but the potential to improve is so much better. Interesting that his salary won't be any more than what he was probably getting in the AFL. But if he goes well it would go a lot higher.

Yeah another reason to try and start watching this game a little more than I have these past 5 years..

As for his salary Brett, the issue is he can play that position for another ten years in this comp even if he is the oldest rookie. He couldnt expect that to happen in Oz. Not on 300k anyway.

Agreed. It really is a career extension, on similar money, and with the potential to go much higher. The average for AFL players in 2007 is supposed to be AUD$174k, although someone like Sav would've been on quite a bit more.
