Hurricanes to boost Super 14 preparations by playing Aussie Rules

If there were a few Falcons making it onto AFL club lists in future, games like
this could help raise the profile of Aussie Rules as an option for guys who
miss out on a professional rugby career. Already there are kids who grow up
playing union, but then switch to rugby league for another chance at a
professional career if they don't look like making it. Obviously though, it's a
much bigger jump to Australian rules.

Already quite a few of the Falcons' list is playing local footy in Queensland,
Victorian and WA... If someone made the big time (or, even better though
unlikely, a NZ team entered the comp) it'd maybe kick things along a bit.

It's interesting though that the Hurricanes would even consider this - I can't
believe it hasn't gotten more interest in the Australian media.

Aaron only the Sydney and Brisbane media would be interested in a story like this being the main states which are into rugby union. To be honest, people in most other states wouldn't have a clue who the Hurricanes are - they might watch the Wallabies occasionally, but aren't interested in club rugby.

I am not at all suprised. Consider that these states would only be interested in an Australian Football story if a) it was during AFL season and b) if the Sydney Swans/Brisbane Lions are still in the finals race. Neither is the case.

The rest of the footy states are generally not interested in printing rugby stories. Since the Australian Rugby Chamipionship flopped and folded last year, rugby is without any genuine presence or pathway in most states.

The possible exception of Perth who are the only footy city with a Super 14 side - Western Force. Though the WA media are typically more interested in stories involving South Africa and NZ is a bit far away from them to really care.
