Irish league looking to expand in '09

A question for those that might know:

Do the Irish tend to play AFL alongside Gaelic Football? Or are there a lot of
Irishmen who play AFL exclusively?

Of those that play exclusively, why? It seems like, unlike almost every
country in the world, the Irish already have a game that is free flowing _and_
high scoring and would have no motivation to play much AFL.

Evan, many of the players would play Aussie Rules (AFL is the name of the league not the sport) exclusively because there is no real gaelic football off-season as such. However having said that, most would have gaelic football backgrounds to become interested in the sport. Some play both because it offers extra fitness and new skills. Gaelic is an exciting game, but it is not for everyone. Some people like a bit more physicality in their sport, which footy offers, as well as a longer match which requires more fitness and a different kind of athleticism. And there is a rugby off-season, so it would appeal to rugby players also. Don't forget that Aussie Rules offers a pathway to professional sport in Australia (whereas Gaelic Football does not) and many Irish players are starting to end up in Australia trying out with semi-professional leagues or a shot at the AFL.
