Well we have had some impassioned pleas not to promote IR too.

I know what you're saying bomberus, but I don't think American football poses any realistic threat to Australian football, other than the occasional loss of a few players to try their hand at punting.

Sean, no problem disliking IR or wanting more IC support, but can you back up that statement that the AFL is promoting Gaelic football or IR "at the expense of the game it is supposed to be promoting (i.e. the International Cup)"? I wouldn't have thought that spending on one would have any impact on spending on the other, and I believe the AFL have previously said that the IR series makes a profit.

From early on when I started to cover Ben Graham in the US, I have commented that it is undoubtedly a two way street. I would argue that more Americans have learnt about Australian rules (from what it actually is, to chasing footy on Youtube etc.) from Graham and Rocca's prescence in the NFL - than Australians have learnt about NFL. I dont know how you would actually measure that, but it's the feeling I get from the time I have spent researching on NFL chat boards. In any case it is a significant sporting story in Australia with lots of angles and possibilities to how it will affect people (for example does it give more credibility to Aussie Rules for kids in non traditional regions in NSW and Qld?). Without a doubt there will be more Australians watch the Super Bowl this year. But we also hope that even more Americans learn a little more about our game (which incidentally is one of USFooty's objectives).

I'll pay that, but as you allude to, it was a while ago now - 3 years, and there hasn't been any sign of it since, happily.

But obviously they aren't / weren't trying to promote Gaelic football. As many articles on here have shown, International Rules matches have been very useful for helping Aussie Rules clubs around the world get a game against Gaelic football clubs when otherwise they'd have no one to play.

Understand what they were trying to do, just illdirected. Just like WFN and the NFL coverage, the intentions may be good, but really just crossing fingers for some indirect benefit. There is no doubt that the other codes reciprocally benefit from the exposure. If it was rugby league, I'm not sure the feelings would be mutual.
