Nauru returns to football with national draft

This is great story. It's pretty widely known and accepted that the nation that most loves our game, in terms of percentage of population, is Nauru. So it was very sad that effectively tribal violence brought it to an end.

So it is tremendous that through their own efforts, their friends in Australia and with AFL assistance they have put in place a plan to return to the playing fields. We were calling for this some time ago but to be honest I doubted it would happen. Perhaps it was the cynic in me thinking that there would be no real interest in helping them because of the small population, no future in terms of TV rights, big merchandise sales, significant numbers of draft picks.

The only real reason to help is because it's the right thing to do. It's nice to know that sometimes that is enough.
