Stynes is in the Australian Football Hall of Fame and Kennelly isn't - end of story. Despite the hype, winning an AFL premiership isn't everything - it is great as a team goal and motivator, but players aren't remembered by that alone. It doesn't compare to a long and decorated career in the game and a Brownlow Medal. Tony Lockett and Gary Ablett didn't win premierships, but they are both in the Hall of Fame based on individual merit and most people consider them greater than Jason Dunstall who was in multiple premiership teams. Some players even walk into AFL premierships in their first season.

Anyway if Jim was born with the game, Melbourne may well have won the 1987 preliminary against Hawthorn and gone on to defeat Carlton for the flag. But you can't hold that against him. He has also achieved in gaelic football what Tadhg yet hasn't - an All-Ireland.

Jim stuck with our game whereas Tadhg never embraced it fully. He has done more for the game than any Irishman and every football follower should wish him well and hope he can continue to do so.

The Brownlow and the consecutive games record does it for me. Simply phenomenal achievements for someone who never played the game as a kid.

Was Stynes a better player? Probably.

But the statement wasn't which player was best.

If you asked a club, you can take player A and he'll win a Brownlow but your club won't win a flag, or you can take player B, and he'll be part of a premiership for you, then I know which one they would take.

So in terms of the experiment being a success, they both were, but Tadhg achieved what every player and club wants most. So certainly it's arguable, hence the term was used - end of story.

Of course if the changes Stynes has made go on to save the Melbourne Football Club then that would be bigger even that a flag.

Bottom line, both great success stories, and currently unmatched by any Irish player since.
