First-ever Full-Scale European Championships set for 2010

This has been coming for a while and is pretty exciting. It should be great preparation for those countries going to IC2011 and long overdue to crown an undisputed Euro champ. At this stage you wouldn't think it feasible to have such an event every year, but at least one between IC years seems sensible.

As mentioned, the EU Cup does a great job with the newer nations but for various reasons we don't see the best players there with Ireland, Denmark and the best Englishmen (the British Bulldogs) not attending. So the key to this event will be making sure that the top 3 or 4 nations are fully represented. It would give the newer nations a realistic view as to where they stand.

It would be nice to still have the teams outside the top 8 able to attend, perhaps to play a 9-a-side second tier competition, like a Challengers league or something. Perhaps arranged in cooperation/coordination with the EU Cup organisers so that maintains some continuity?

So for me the big questions are:

1. Will Ireland and Great Britain fully commit?

2. Will it be Great Britain or England with Wales and Scotland to compete separately since it is European level not IC (I expect the answer is GB)?

3. Will the AFL throw some support behind the event, given it is not a yearly request, is excellent preparation for IC teams, and they apparently have supported the CEAFL in the past which was one of the first European competitions, so this is like that but beefed up.

4. Will an agreed AFL Europe body emerge because of / inspite of / in parallel with this?

Great to see some action on this front. Congrats to Sweden and Denmark for taking the step.

Since there is a year's notice, if all 10 listed sides wishes to attend, then it would seem reasonable to rank them in order and then have the bottom 4 playoff earlier in the year for the right to the 2 spots.

Just using our rankings as a guide:

http://www.worldfootynews.com/staticp...kings_2008

so for Europe:

1. Ireland
2. GB
3. Denmark
4. Sweden
5. Croatia
6. Germany
7. Finland
8. France
9. Spain
10. Netherlands

and not mentioned but maybe also Czech Republic?

So perhaps a playoff between Finland, France, Spain, Netherlands and Czechs for 7th and 8th? Of course teams like Finland might dispute their ranking.

It requires extra logistics so maybe unreasonable, but splitting them any other way seems tough since there isn't much of a form guide.

Maybe if 4 of those teams wanted to attend then randomly draw them to play one of the other teams, winner is in, loser is out? A harsh call, but another example why a side competition for the remaining teams would be important for future ranking.

Lots for the organisers to decide.
