Australia vs World All-Stars in 20 years' time?

I think there'll be Pacific-recruited players in the AFL before South Africa... South Africans could be another 5 years off or maybe longer.

I would also like to see a spot (or a few if warranted) left open for U16s in other countries in the Oceania all stars team that plays in the Australian champs. It would have to be on merit and would be hard for selectors to assess - but with other junior comps going on in South Africa, Canada, UK, Indonesia etc I would like to see them have a direct pathway for any that can be identified as special talents (unless an alternative to this can be provided e.g South Africans in the WA squad).

The Oceania under 16s tournament "could" logistically probably host the US and Canadian sides, or potentially even those from east and south east Asia. Cadz was involved in establishing AFL Indonesia, plus he has also been in touch with the guys in East Timor.

Although I don't know if the AFL Oceania would want to go down that road.

I think these kinds of events are most use than the Barassi Tournament though, at the current stage in development. Something like the Barassi IAFYT might be more relevant as a junior world cup in 10-20 years when there are more juniors playing regularly worldwide.

At what point do you run a team via Rugby/Soccer style rules allowing at very least nation of birth - and have a 'world team' perhaps in 5 years time with a mix of fair dinkum IC talent and AFL listed etc.

Perhaps vs the Indigenous All Stars in Darwin in the pre-season.

Aaron - I understand that it would be up to the administration of AFL Oceania as to what they can do with the available resources and funding in terms of who would be at their tournament. I guess my biggest concern is that we get any kid, playing anywhere in the world to that elite under 16 tournament for their own development and to put them in front of the scouts at a critical time in their footy timeline to be pointed in the right direction, and get the best chance to be on the end of scholarships (particularly from AFL clubs). For the kids of Oceania I am thrilled that this will be the case. (Will PNG still play as stand alone and come through Qld or play with Oceania?). But for the kids elsewhere what and where is their equivalent pathway?

Mick I think the Aboriginal All Stars might take it as a bit of an insult to be honest - unless i massively underestimate the quality of players that woud make up such a team. And I dont ever see AFL clubs giving their listed guys a chance to play in a World team - playing for their country they may be slightly more sentimental.
