Nice step for a player that size. Great to see his team mates were really pleased for him as well.

It's easy to forget what a hard road he has to walk - probably looking at 2 long years of work before he's likely to get an AFL game, so given he's come from other sports, it would be easy to give up. Especially as the days get shorter, the weather gets colder, slogging around on wet crowds in front of small crowds. That's where the support of players and the club is so important.

Mind you, if Collingwood's ruckmen Darren Jolly or Josh Fraser get an injury, who would likely be next in line for a call up? Any Collingwood fans know the squad better?

It'd be great for him and the whole footy community for him to make it. He's already been written off by quite a few people. Paul Daffey from the Footy Almanac writes the player-by-player guide to everyone on AFL lists in the Age newspaper. His comment on Shae was - "Former basketballer and American footballer who's been plucked from Wisconsin. Is such a long shot he makes Hi Jinx look well-backed."

But then again, I don't know how closely Paul follows o/s or multicultural development - his comment on Majak Daw was "Tall, quick, big leap, boundless potential... has anyone mentioned he was born in Somalia?"

To which the answer is, "no, but plenty have mentioned that he's from Sudan."

We used to be friendly with the Almanac guys! Constructive criticism...

In all seriousness though I think such picks used to be very very speculative. But with full time training and facilities like extended 1 on 1 coaching, video feedback, biomechanics coaches etc, they can put probably 6 years training into 1 year. It gives athletes from other sports a much higher likelihood of succeeding.

And so many Aussie rookies never make the grade, so is the success rate likely to be lower with guys like Shae? The jury is probably still out, but it's a good reason to barrack for him... except for the Collingwood bit.

I've got a lot of respect for Paul Daffey - I think he's easily the best grassroots footy journalist out there. If you haven't read Local Rites, go and find a copy.

Just pointing out that a lot of people aren't expecting Shae to make it.
