They were national teams. Japan AFL sent their university national team. You can see a slideshow on the Japan AFL website.

Great to see that China and Japan sent "national' side. What about Indonesia? I am guessing all the rest were ex-pat sides? Is that the case? Those ex-pat sides at Arafura used to cut a swathe through Darwin!

As I understand it, the teams who played as a curtain-raiser to the AFL game were national teams.

But the teams in the actual Championships would have been the expat-based China Reds and Japan aka Tokyo Goannas, wouldn't they?

I can't imagine an all-Chinese team finishing higher than the expat-based Lao, Malaysia etc clubs at this stage of their development. I'd be pleased to be corrected!!
